Zion National Park
Zion national park is a small national park located only 30 miles from Hurricane. It is a canyon with thousand foot red cliffs on all sidese. Views are amazing.
It is also very popular, and June is the peak season. Vehicle traffic will be limited, so you will park your car and ride the free shuttle around. There are frequent stops and many shuttles, so you can stop and explore the canyon.
A note about hiking: Most of the hikes we have suggested are not in Zion. Imagine trying to get our big family parked and then on various shuttles to arrive at a hiking trail without loosing anyone! We feel Zion is best enjoyed as a sight seeing adventure, with an occasional walk or hike as time permits.
Petroglyphs in Anasazi Valley
Located about 30 miles from Hurricane is an area know as Anasazi Valley. This scenic area is full of large rocks with petroglyphs. Some rocks can be seen from the car, while other require a short, mild hike. If you like seeing ancient artifacts, you'll be amazed by this area.
Dinosaur Tracks in the Desert
With any car or SUV, you can venture a short distance into the desert. You will see desert landscapes, and lots of dirt :). At one stop, you will see dinosaur tracks. There are several sizes of well defined tracks. Continuing on, you may want to stop to check out an old fort and desert spring.
Grand Canyon, North Rim
For anyone looking to venture further, you can arrive at the Grand Canyon via a 2 hr drive. The north rim is a less visited spot on the grand canyon, but has some of the best views. There is a paved path and gift shop. Elevation is much higher, so the weather is usually nice and cool that time of year. You should plan for about 6 hrs to travel and have a good visit.
Yep! This looks fun, too.
