There are literally hundreds of hiking trails in southern Utah. The most famous area is Zion National Park. However, there are complications in reaching those trails during the summer. Fortunately, we have found many great trails close by which are less crowded and easier access. The trails below are favorites of ours listed from easiest to hardest.
Red Cliffs
Overview: Easy, 1.5 miles (.75 mile each way). Mostly flat.
This hike is easy, short, and close by. The trial wanders through a canyon with huge red cliffs (hence the name). It is great for kids. Its great for avid hikers. There are a few short, but steep hills. It is mostly flat.
Water Canyon
Overview: Moderate, 4.2 miles (2.1 mile each way). Gradual slope.
This is the big canyon hiking experience. You will start on a desert path at a mouth of the canyon. As you hike up the canyon, the vegetation changes from desert, to wild blackberries, to mossy rocks. The trail ends at a narrow rock slot canyon where the water enters the canyon by weeping from the cliff.
Angels Landing
Overview: Difficult, 5.0 miles (2.5 mile each way). Steep and cliffs.
This is a hike you will remember your whole life. The first section of trail is cut into the shear cliffs of Zions park. Next, you will climb a long section of switchbacks as you ascend over 1500 ft. The last section follows a narrow ridge-line with 1500 ft strait drops on both sides. The trail is safe for hikers in good physical condition. Not for kids.
Narrows Canyoneering
Overview: Difficult, 13 miles. Long hike with repels and swiming.
Canyoneering is hiking mixed with exploring. It is a truly unique experience. This hike will require a permit, so you have to commit ahead of time. Also, once you drop into a slot canyon there is no exit for miles. This means the hike is weather permitting (rain = flash flood), and you need to be confident in your physical ability. The hike starts by descending into a shallow canyon. As you continue, the walls will grow over 1000 ft high. Water will begin running off the canyon walls. Temperature will be around 60 degrees, and you will be walking and at time swimming in 60 degree water. Some parts will require a short repel. Some parts require cliff jump into a pool of cold water. We will help you prepare for the trip and complete it safely.
I'm in. Do you notice a pattern? I want to do everything, you guys look great, of course we'd want to join you!
ReplyDeleteWe'll have two who want to hike the narrows. How do we get a permit for this?
ReplyDeleteWe plan to meet everyone at Bryce Canyon. During the reunion we would love to do kid friendly hikes, a kid friendly atv ride and zip lining. Leon and I would love to do the Narrows.
ReplyDeleteWe can rent camp if you can suggest a place...
